Hair color experimentation is something which sounds extremely exciting. I had my fair share of crazy hair color experiments, and exactly know how it feels the moment you realize what a grave horrible mistake you have done. Nevertheless, I always jump to the idea of either ombre, highlights, changing the whole color or sometimes the new trend of Balayage. Whether you want to get rid of an unwanted color to have a natural look on the hair again or you wish to change and re-color the existing hair color, it is important to find a technique that is right for you. You also have to keep in mind that the extra chemicals you use should not damage the hair. This is what we are going to deal with in this post on how to remove the hair color or dye in the comfort of your home.

1. Color Removers

This is the first option you should consider while attempting to remove an undesired hair color. This is the best possible choice as they remove the color and at the same time restore the softness of the hair. They even work great for permanent colors as well. There are two types of color removers – color reducers and color strippers. While the former is extremely safe, it is advisable to skip the latter as it strips the oils of the hair, making it dry and lifeless. Do read the guidelines carefully before using either of them.

2. Vitamin C Treatment

Vitamin C treatment is very useful for the purpose of removing hair color and at the same time also provides protection to the hair as well. It is an excellent procedure for removal of semi-permanent hair color. Although it has a slight drying effect on the hair, it can be easily cured with a deep conditioning or hot oil massage. All you have to do is crush 2-3 (1000mg) Vitamin C tablets with the shampoo and lather on the hair. Lather for around 10-15 minutes and rinse off, followed by your favorite conditioner. It will considerably lighten the effect of the hair color.

3. Bleach

Bleaching process will remove every kind of hair color ranging from temporary to permanent. It involves mild to extreme damage risk for hair and hence only use this method when you have no option left. Always try using lowest possible peroxide amount as it removes the natural melanin from the hair. Be patient and read all the instructions carefully while dealing with the bleach for removing hair color.

4. Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

The anti-dandruff shampoo is very commonly found in the market and literally every brand has its own kind. It is very effective in removing hair color from the hair and involves very mild risk as well for normal to oily hair. But dry hair people have to take precautions while using the shampoo. It has a high pH level and will help strip the semi-permanent dye from your hair. Wash your hair with anti-dandruff shampoo for seven to eight times at a gap of every 2 to 3 days. For faster result, mix a pinch of baking soda to make the process faster.

5. Baking Soda

Baking Soda is very easy to find in our kitchen shelf and works excellently on hair to remove the hair color. Bicarbonate soda is a natural bleaching agent and it can easily lighten the shade of your hair color. Mix equal quantities of shampoo and baking soda and make a semi-runny paste with water. Now, apply the mixture concentrating on the colored stands to lighten them. Lather for around 5-10 minutes and wash off with cold water. Repeat the procedure and follow it by conditioner or Apple Cider Vinegar and water in 1:3 ratio to curb the frizziness.

6. Bath Salts

Bath salts which contain sodium bicarbonate and Epsom salts are of great help to remove unwanted hair color easily. Add a certain amount of bath salts to the water and soak your hair in that water for around 15-20 minutes. You would gradually notice the water changing its color as the semi-permanent hair color starts coming off smoothly. This is a very affordable way to remove hair color if you don't want to use harsh methods like bleaching to remove the hair color.

7. Swimming

The pool water is filled with Chlorine which helps in removing the hair color. Though it is not very efficient in removing the color completely, it definitely fades the color, lightens it and works great on semi-permanent color. The effects are elusive but if you're a regular swimmer you will notice the difference. Always take precautions and immediately wash off your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo after having a good swim.
