Dosa is one of the most famous breakfast in South India. The main preparation of dosa includes preparation of dosa batter. Once it is ready, then making dosa is a matter of few minutes. Also, the dosa batter should be prepared with right ingredients in right quantities. Otherwise, the dosa taste goes for a toss. So, here I am presenting to you all, the dosa batter preparation.

Ingredients:
  • Urad Dal - 1 glass
  • Rice - 2 glasses
  • Fenugreek Seeds - 1 tablespoon
  • Flattened Rice/Poha - 1 cup
  • Water - As required to form a smooth batter
  • Salt - 1 tablespoon

Preparation:

Urad dal is to be soaked in water for 4 hours.

Rice and fenugreek seeds together should also be soaked in water for 4 hours. After 4 hours, clean the urad dal, rice & fenugreek seeds with water. Add the washed flattened rice to the rice and fenugreek seeds mix.

Take a blender and put rice and fenugreek seeds along with flattened rice. Add some salt and water and grind it. When the rice mixture turns soft, add urad dal. Add some more water and blend to form a smooth batter. Remove the batter from the blender and transfer it to a bowl.

Keep this batter for fermentation. In summer, 3-4 hours is required for fermentation. Other seasons, it needs 5-6 hours for fermentation. This dosa batter is now ready.

Serving Options:

This dosa batter is used for preparing dosas. The dosa preparation can be seen in the upcoming posts.

  10. Lavanya, interesting combination and sequence of adding the ingredients for grinding. We always add the fenugreek with urad dal and dont add poha/beaten rice. The batters are also ground separately. Will try this combination too.
