Once a year, clear out your beauty bag. The fall is a good time to think about whether your cosmetic needs may need an overhaul. As it starts to get cooler, we realise we need a little more makeup and a change in colors to maintain a healthy glow and complexion. If we are using more, then we need to make sure it is fresh, so it isn't prone to caking.

Start with your cleanser, toner and moisturiser. Winter and heating dries skin out rapidly and pollution affects us more. Try a gentle cleanser designed to soften, and a toner with a lesser alcohol content. Moisturiser for the face should include UV protection all year round. There are some that are designed for harsher climates that may work for you. Try one with a hint of foundation to bring a little glow to your skin. For the body, pick a long lasting moisturiser to lessen the impact of extra layers of clothes rubbing the skin all day.

Check your blemish or colour control cream. If the green tinge looks caked or is separating from the cream base, it is time for it to be replaced. These usually last us all year, as we don't really use them, but it could be a good idea to replace them annually. Foundation for this time of year should be a shade lighter, so you don't stand out as an unnatural winter colour. Your blusher may need to be a much lighter shade if you tend to suffer rosy cheeks in the cold. Mascara and eye makeup needs to be waterproof at this time of year, but make sure you have plenty of high-quality eye makeup remover too.

The next task is to take a long hard look in the mirror under a good light and see how your face is faring. Exposure to the sun during the summer may have caused some dry patches or changes in color. Dark circles may be more apparent if we are tired. One or two wrinkles may start to deepen. If you are more disappointed than expected about the condition of your skin, you could seek a good facial surgeon to undertake a procedure. Look for someone like Dr. Vitenas Medical Spa in Houston, TX or a good clinic that has a range of procedures to offer. The procedures may include IPL therapy to reduce rosacea, dark or sun spots, and freckles. If you are suffering from acne, it may be a good idea to seek the help of a clinic before the weather causes a flareup.

If your skin is looking dull and unhappy, it could be a good time to book a clinic appointment for a peel, to remove the dead cells. This is more intense than exfoliating alone, and tends to offer a more even and effective result. If you have large pores, you may be worried that makeup could cause problems. Seek a clinic offering laser heat therapy that could help improve their appearance.
