Are you considering plastic surgery? Are you unhappy with the shape of your nose or the look of your aging face? Before choosing to go under the knife, have a read of our guide below.

1. Don't Trust The Internet

Whilst you are researching the best plastic surgeons in the country, you may think that the internet's top search results offer the best advice. But, search engines actually work in terms of their links, sponsorship and posts. This means that the most reputable clinics may not be at the top of your search results.

2. Ask Your Doctor

For some trusted advice, make an appointment to meet with your doctor. Ask whether they can recommend a friend or colleague in the plastic surgery field that they trust and that has an excellent reputation. Choosing your clinic on a personal recommendation is much safer than doing so on a google recommendation.

3. Go For Consultations

Don't just go for one consultation and then book your procedure. Go for two or three consultations at different clinics. This will give you a better idea of what individual clinics offer. Choose to speak to a surgeon who specialises in the field of plastic surgery that you are interested in. For example, if you are planning to have breast enlargements make sure to speak to a breast augmentation specialist instead of just a plastic surgeon.

4. Do Your Research

Don't take what you see at face value, do your research carefully. Ask the surgeons that you meet with to see their qualifications and portfolio, this will give you a better idea of what to expect. Have a look on the General Medical Council website, this will allow you to check that your chosen surgeon's qualifications are valid.

5. Ask About Success Rates

If you ask your surgeon what his success rates are for your chosen procedure, be aware that if he says 100% then something is not quite right. Ask how many procedures they have done and how many of those needed to be re-done or tweaked. Also enquire about what the procedure is if your surgery goes wrong – will the surgeon fix it for free or will you incur extra charges? Be aware that like any surgery, there is of course room for error, regardless of how talented your surgeon is.

6. Do Not Accept Discounts

The medical industry does not allow doctors or surgeons to offer discounts or incentives to potential patients. It is completely against the General Medical Council codes of conduct. So if your surgeon offers you a discount, do not accept and ensure that you find a new surgeon.

7. Consider The Risks Involved

Like any surgery, there are risks associated with every procedure. Going under anesthetic is not something that you should take lightly. Before doing so, it is important to understand what the risk actually entail. The plastic surgery industry is like no other medical industry, it is a lot less regulated than normal doctors and surgeons. It is important to find a reputable and trusted surgeon, who is experienced and fully trained to successfully carry out your procedure.
