Sustainability. Only a decade ago, it was a concept the majority of the population didn't give a great deal of thought to. 'Sustainability? That's a kind of cereal, right? I prefer Sultana Bran'

Times have changed, needless to say, and sustainability is the buzzword of the era. Not for no reason. As our environment melts into oblivion before our very eyes, the need to re-examine one's way of life becomes a matter of the most grave urgency. Food, furniture, clothing, buildings- were they produced in a way that will contribute to, or help to alleviate, the degradation of our environment? Businesses such as Cannings Free Range Butchers are helping to fill the growing demand for environmentally sustainable food.

Of course, sustainability is not the only issue when it comes to meat consumption. The welfare of the animals, the manner in which they were slaughtered, and the kind of diet they consumed all come into play. As more and more information comes to light regarding the appalling conditions under which factory farmed animals must live, we must begin to question what kind of suffering and cruelty the juicy lamb chop on our plate endured prior to being doused in gravy and served with a side of mash.

Until recently, for example, few were aware of just how detrimental a factory farmed cows diet is to it's wellbeing. Factory farmed animals subsist on a grain based diet. Unfortunately, cows do not have the digestive system to correctly process grains. This leads to sick animals, who must then be pumped full of antibiotics to keep them alive till it's time for the slaughterhouse floor. Unhappy, sick cows equate to poor quality, flavourless beef products. Grass fed beef tastes better, takes less of a toll on the environment, is perfect for the animal's digestive system, and results in an all round higher quality and more sustainable foodstuff than the factory farmed alternative.
