If you are a South Indian then you must be well aware of Tamarind Rice / Pulihora / Puliyogare. It is basically a festive dish which is prepared on special occasions and festivals. In Andhra Pradesh, Pulihora is surely made for almost all the festivals. It is a tangy and spicy delicacy which is made using tamarind and rice. Not only for festivals, but people also consider this dish during travel. This doesn't get spoiled quickly and hence people who prefer eating home food on long journeys make sure they prepare pulihora and carry it along with them. At my place, this dish is made often. Whenever there is any leftover rice at home, you can make pulihora making best use of it. Also this is a very simple recipe which is good for beginners in cooking.


Ingredients:
  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder - Half teaspoon
  • Oil - 3 tablespoons
  • Tamarind pulp - Made from lemon sized ball of tamarind
  • Red Chillies - 3(each cut into two halves)
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Urad Dal - 1 teaspoon
  • Chana dal - 1 teaspoon
  • Peanuts - 2 tablespoons
  • Green Chillies - 4(each slit into two)
  • Curry leaves - Few
  • Salt - As per taste

Preparation:

Cook the rice and allow it to cool. Add turmeric powder and a tablespoon of oil and keep it aside.
Take a pan to heat and add two tablespoons of oil to it. Add red chillies, mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal.


Once they pop add peanuts and saute till they turn light brown. Then add green chilies along with curry leaves.


Add the tamarind pulp along with salt and cook for 2-3 minutes.


Once it turns thick, remove it from heat and mix it with the rice.
Once mixed, keep aside for 3 hours and consume after that. Enjoy the delicious Andhra Pulihora.


Serving Options:

Serve the delicious Andhra Pulihora with papad or pickle or chips. You will love it because of its tangy taste.
