Most of us are guilty of relying on over-the-counter painkillers whenever we experience common health problems like colds or headaches. But, wouldn't you rather use a natural remedy where possible instead of a drug? Unknown to many, there are a number of natural remedies that are effective for treating common ailments. Below we have listed a few of these treatments. However, before trying any of them, you must speak with your doctor. These are harmless remedies but, if you experience symptoms on more than an occasional basis, your doctor may advise the use of specific medications.

Headaches:

Headaches are very common. Some people suffer from headaches and migraines on a regular basis and so they rely heavily on over-the-counter painkillers. However, there are some home remedies that can be effective in alleviating a sore head. Lavender is known for it's soothing properties. By inhaling or applying some lavender oil to your temples, you will feel relaxed, and your headache will start to fade. Peppermint oil is also very useful in relieving tension in the head. Headaches are often caused by poor blood flow. Inhaling peppermint oil will open up your sinuses and increase your blood flow.

Cold Symptoms:

Unfortunately, there is no cure for the common cold, but there are some natural remedies you can take to relieve the symptoms. A cup of hot water mixed with honey and lemon or lime can work wonders. The honey helps to soothe the pain in your throat. The lemon gives you a kick of vitamin C, and the steam from the hot water will open up your blocked nose. Echinacea plant is another natural remedy that is thought by many to have cold-fighting properties. It is best taken as soon as you feel a cold coming on. Echinacea comes in the form of tablets, oil and tea.

Piles (Hemorrhoids):

Piles are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus which cause discomfort when passing stools. If you have painful piles, you may wish to try some over-the-counter treatments (please check with your doctor before use). However, if you are susceptible to piles or at a higher risk of getting them (e.g. if you are pregnant or overweight) there are some natural treatments and preventative measures you can take. For example, witch hazel applied topically can reduce bleeding, pain, itching and swelling. Further, the plant called butcher's broom, administered by capsule or tea, will promote constriction of the veins.

Heartburn:

Most people will experience the symptoms of heartburn at some time, and many experience it regularly. Heartburn is a hot, stinging sensation in the chest and throat after eating. You can reduce the discomfort of heartburn by swallowing a glass of water mixed with a spoonful of baking soda. Baking soda will neutralise your stomach acid and so the burning sensation will fade. Aloe vera plant is used to relieve burns, including heartburn. Next time you suffer from indigestion, try a small glass of aloe vera juice.
